Abrasive blasting is the process of forcefully pushing a fine stream of abrasive material over a rough or flat surface to smooth it, roughen it, shape it or otherwise remove unwanted surface impurities. It is one of the most important processes used for construction purposes because it enables quick and efficient removal of debris from hard surfaces such as concrete, slate, bricks, tiles and so on. A Guide to Abrasive Blasting Media
One of the most common types of abrasive blasting is called tilghman blasting and it involves compressing a drum of compressed air in a cylindrical fashion that has a high-speed nozzle attached to it. The air nozzle shoots out a high-pressure stream of sand and abrasive particles that is used to clean glass, copper and stainless steel surfaces. The streams of material can reach up to a meter in diameter and are usually pumped with water to prevent it from seeping into surrounding surfaces. This method is ideal for cleaning glass windows and doors and for use on polished concrete, slate, metal surfaces and other smooth surfaces.
Sandblasting and grit blasting both employ different abrasive media types and methods to accomplish their tasks but both have different impacts on the quality of the finished surface. While grit blasting makes surfaces more polished and shiny, sandblasting helps remove tiny particles of debris and helps extend the life of the finish. These two methods are very popular for use in a wide variety of cleaning applications and there are different techniques used in each process to accomplish the cleaning goals.
