The primary aim of yoga therapy is to teach and train individuals to experience harmony and balance within themselves and with others. This can be achieved by undertaking exercises that focus on breathing, relaxation, meditation, postures, and meditation. The primary tools used during yoga sessions include yoga mats, yoga straps and blankets, pranayama (breathing techniques), mudras (postures), asanas (poses), and dhyana (concentration). Some forms of yoga therapy may also incorporate meditation and spiritual techniques for additional effects.

 

There are a number of conditions that can benefit from using yoga therapy. Common conditions associated with yoga therapy and/or yoga classes include chronic pain, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Fibromyalgia, Anxiety, depression, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Post-traumatic stress disorder, SAD (seasonal affective disorder), and low back pain. Research has shown that yoga can have a positive effect on all of these conditions, providing relief from pain and improving mood and general health. The therapeutic effects of yoga are likely due to the increased strength and flexibility of muscles, along with increased oxygenation of blood, which provides for greater overall wellness.
